German lower league club SV Vonderort lost to their rivals PSV Oberhausen with a record-breaking scoreline of 43-0. Vonderort’s squad is made up mostly of refugees from Syria, Iraq and Guinea and on average, the amateur club’s goalkeeper Marco Kwiotek conceded a goal almost every two minutes in the game. SV Vonderort were 35-0 down at half-time, but the keeper’s performance improved drastically in the second half, as he went on to concede only eight more goals.
At one point in the game SV Vonderort were only able to field eight players, so the opposition club, PSV Oberhausen, made the sporting gesture of removing three of their own players to even up the odds. Even playing 8 v 8 football could not help Vonderort as the side failed to score in the game.
Five days after the game, two police cars arrived at the SV Vonderort training ground in Bottrop. Marco Kwiotek was escorted from the field in the middle of a training session by armed police officers. According to The Sun, the 25-year-old keeper was heard shouting out “They just want to clear some things up.”
The circumstances surrounding the police inquiry are currently unclear. The police have refused to comment on the reason for their questioning the shot-stopper, and Marco Kwiotek has not been answering his phone calls and has not been seen since. According to edujandon.com, the goalkeeper was released from custody almost immediately after the questioning.
The German club’s trainer Yvonne Liesenfeld said: “I don’t know what is going on with the police.
“First he lets in 43 goals and then he gets taken away by the law.”
Managing director of club clueless about ongoings
SV Vonderort’s managing director Christian Schroer has also spoken a few words on the matter, admitting that he’s just as clueless as everybody else is. He said: “We are in the dark. The police won’t tell us what happened and we can’t reach Marco on his mobile.”
He told the Express that he is hopeful that Kwiotek will be available for selection in the club’s next game, but his teammates have begun training for the upcoming fixture and are preparing to face their next opponents without him. After conceding 43 goals in a game, one would hope that the team have better options between the sticks available to them.
