The 2013 German Super Cup was a great game of football, the best possible advertisement for the upcoming Bundesliga season in which hosts Borussia Dortmund won a thriller 4-2 against FC Bayern Munich at the soldout Signal Iduna Park.
Dortmund started-off with their usual pressing, which wasn’t to the liking of Bayern Munich and a mistake from goalkeeper Tom Starke who couldn’t collect or clear a Sven Bender header, was headed in by Marco Reus after only 6 minutes. Only a couple of minutes later, Dortmund could have doubled their lead, but Lewandowski was offside when sent through.
Thereafter, Bayern Munich slowly got into the game with Roman Weidenfeller twice denying Xherdan Shaqiri to equalise. Due to the heat in Dortmund, the referee Dr. Drees gave both sides a drinks break in which Pep Guardiola explained to his team what he expected off them, but except a David Alaba cross which Mario Mandzukic missed in the middle there was little for Bayern Munich in the game, while Ilkay Gündogan twice was denied before the break.
The match would become even more intense after the breather though it started off slowly, but in the 54th minute Arjen Robben headed in a Philipp Lahm cross to equalise. But within the next three minutes Dortmund would be 3-1 ahead as first Daniel van Buyten headed in a Gündogan cross into his own goal, then Gündogan curled in a nice one. But Bayern Munich was not beaten yet, then Arjen Robben in the 64th minute once more scored off a Lahm pass as he turned around Subotic and sent Weidenfeller into the wrong corner.
FC Bayern were now playing for the equaliser and only a couple of minutes later Mandzukic’s bicycle kick just missed the target, while thereafter Thiago chipped the ball forward for Thomas Müller whose 80th minute shot kissed the crossbar. FC Bayern now risked everything for their third goal which gave Dortmund chances for counter-attacks, but first Aubameyang, then Sahin and Reus missed the chance to decide the game. But the decider in favour of the hosts came in the 86th minute when the very quick Aubameyang ran forward, squared the ball for Reus to push in and though Reus was actually offside, the goal was given.
Nothing happened thereafter as Dortmund upset Bayern Munich 4-2 to win the 2013 German Super Cup.
