American company Nike’s first venture in producing England’s first shirt after it won the rights of production last year faced a hurdle as it came under heavy criticism as the design heavily resembled that of what Germany wore in 1996.
So much so that German newspapers ran news saying: “The English have copied our kit.” After an announcement was made on twitter, it received a lot of heat from fans worldwide, with the hashtag #german trending on the social media site regarding the very issue.
Former England striker Gary Linekar too joined the trend and tweeted thus in jest,
However, many feel that England has all claims on that design as that was the very design an English school football team had used on their jersey. These very feeling s were echoed be Liverpool forward Stan Collymore.
Also, New Zealand had also used a jersey with a design strikingly similar to the design in question.
