Ryan Giggs called for more protection for youngster Adnan Januzaj following an alleged stamp by Hull City defender, David Meyler. Giggs was furious that no action was taken against the defender and called the inaction displayed by the officials “a joke”.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Giggs said “I didn’t see [the incident] but I have seen his leg, it goes from his knee to his ankle. It is the second time it has happened to him this season and it’s not great to see. It is terrible, his leg. He needs protecting. He is a brilliant player, he is exciting and the authorities need to stamp down on it, whether that can happen now … but it was bad. I have not seen the stamp but I have seen his leg and it is bad. It is a joke.”
David Meyler allegedly stamped on the teenager’s foot during the final stages of Manchester United’s 3-1 win on Tuesday. Hull City manager, Steve Bruce claims he didn’t see the incident but praised the youngster saying “I haven’t seen anything. If he keeps his feet on the ground, which I am sure he will do, he is going to be a superstar.”
Meyler is likely to face retrospective action after the match officials missed the incident. If he is charged by the FA, he will miss the FA Cup final against Arsenal later this month.
