Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs has warned the youngsters not to get complacent after enjoying initial success. The 39-year-old has been a regular first team player at Manchester United for around two decades and recently won his 13th league trophy with the club.
United have had many youngsters who, after making a reputation for themselves in the reserve side, have failed to make it big at the top level. And with Adnan Januzaj, a highly promising Belgian teenager added to the first team squad ahead of the match against Chelsea, Giggs said:
“I have seen so many young players over the years have a chance and not really take it.
“Others think ‘this is my chance I am going to make sure the manager takes notice’ and they perform like they have been doing in the youth team or the reserves.
“Nick Powell did it earlier this season. He came on against Wigan and scored. That is what young players have to do.”
Speaking from his own experience, the Welsh wizard added:
“The hunger comes from a lot of things. First and foremost it is about enjoyment. I enjoy the challenge. Obviously I am coming to the end of my career, so I am thinking could this be my last chance to win a trophy.
“But retaining hunger is not something I need to try for. It just happens. You have to do it at this club. When you go out at Old Trafford, you have to perform. In away games it is the same.
“That comes from making sure I am ready for the game by what I do in training. I have done that for so long I just carry on.”
