Goa Pro League: Wilred Leisure surprise Sporting Goa, hold them to a 1-1 draw

High flying Sporting Clube de Goa were brought back into reality by Wilred Leisure SC, who held the Flaming Orange to a 1-1 draw in their Goa Pro League – Round 3 match at the Duler ground in Mapusa yesterday. Sporting Goa moved to seven points from three matches, while Wilred Leisure opened their account with their first point from as many matches.

In their first couple of matches, Sporting Clube de Goa had been on fire beating Margao SC with an astonishing 11-1 scoreline and then following it up with a 5-1 against Goa Velha SC, while Wilred Leisure SC came into the match without a point after losing 0-2 against Goa Velha SC and 1-3 against Churchill Brothers SC.

But today was a new match and Wilred Leisure had the better start into the game. First, in the 9th minute, Bonny Niasso received the ball on the flank from Angelo Colaco, but in the middle, Melwin Fernandes missed the chance. In the 17th minute, again Bonny sent the ball forward for Melwin, but Sporting Goa’s Keenan Almeida made a timely tackle.

Sporting Clube de Goa weren’t their usual self and needed a lot of time to settle down, but once they did, they went ahead in the 36th minute when Boima Jerry Karpeh’s shot was blocked by keeper Jovial Coutinho but midfielder Cajetan Fernandes scored off the rebound. Wilred Leisure were suddenly behind, but they had a chance to equalise before the break as Melwin send the ball through to Agnelo but he was denied by Flaming Orange keeper Ravi Kumar.

Sporting Clube de Goa coach Oscar Bruzon already in the first session made some positional chances which worked for his team and after the break he brought on seasoned Nigerian Ogba Kalu Nnanna in place of Beevan D’Mello.

Jerry had a chance to double Sporting Goa’s lead in the 57th minute but he hit the side-netting and couldn’t add to his eight goals scored in the first couple of matches.

In the 72nd minute, Wilred Leisure were awarded a penalty after Sporting Goa captain Mathew Gonsalves brought down Jerose Oliveira inside the box. But there was confusion before referee Chandrashekar Shirodkar awarded the penalty as he first awarded a free-kick and after protests from the Wilred Leisure players, spoke to his assistant Dharma Chodankar and changed his decision and pointed to the spot. Captain Bruno Fernandes equalised for Wilred Leisure.

Sporting Goa had a final chance in the 87th minute through substitute Victorino Fernandes, but his header went over the crossbar.

It ended one-all between Sporting Clube de Goa and Wilred Leisure SC, which means the Flaming Orange dropped vital two points in the title race while their opponents gained a point in their fight for survival.
