Greater Manchester Police have mocked Wayne Rooney’s recent run of horrible form with a tweet on their official Twitter handle. However, the tweet was subsequently taken down from the social media site after a lot of flak.
The England captain has been heavily criticised for his recent performances. He missed an important penalty in the shoot-out against Middlesbrough in the Capital One cup, a match which United lost. In the next game against Crystal Palace, the United skipper failed to manage even a single touch in the opposition’s box. The 30-year old has only two goals in ten league outings so far this term.
The tweet which was directed at Rooney read, "Missing person - Wayne Rooney last seen in the Trafford, any sightings please inform colleagues." Though, the tweet was taken down but screenshots of the controversial statement on Twitter are still making rounds.
Manchester United after a good start to the season have undergone a dip in form. They have failed to score in their last 3 matches against Manchester City, Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace respectively.
The Red Devils, who are a team with the maximum number of goals in Premier League history, have failed to score in last 5 hours and 25 minutes on the pitch. With the eviction of Robin Van Persie and Falcao, Rooney was supposed to take on the goalscoring burden for the club.
He was also allowed to play in his favourite position, i.e. centre forward, by Louis Van Gaal. The striker, however, has failed to fulfil everyone’s expectations and the fans who hoped Rooney will be the star of this season now want him benched.
Alan Shearer talked about Rooney’s lack of form in his article on The Sun and admitted that the forward needs a bit of break.
"Now I’m his biggest fan and I’m not saying he is finished but if ever a player needed to recharge his batteries it is Rooney. His spark has gone out at the moment and he needs time out of the game to relight that fire inside him." he wrote.
Louis Van Gaal has invested his faith in Rooney even though the forward has failed to score in last four matches. Ahead of CSKA Moscow’s trip to Old Trafford, the United manager said, "I still have confidence in Wayne Rooney".
The Champions League tie on Tuesday will be another chance for Rooney to get his goalscoring touch back.
