Gunners to reload midfield with a proposed £8m swoop of Anderlecht's Biglia

RSC Anderlecht v AC Milan - UEFA Champions League

Arsenal are keenly following Anderlecht midfielder, Lucas Biglia, as they look to address their defensive frailties that has led to them conceding a lot of cheap and unnecessary goals at crucial times. Arsenal will be hoping for Biglia to slot in the middle of the park and help out with the defensive and the more wanting side of Arsenal’s midfield, which suffered a major blow with the departure of Alex Song to Barcelona at the start of the season.

The 26-year old Argentine Defensive Midfielder, who has been at Anderlecht since 2006 has two years left on his current contract, was a transfer target for Wenger even during the summer and has also invoked interest from Liverpool and a host of other European clubs. The Belgian Champions have put a price tag of around £8m on him.

Biglia has played in the Champions League this season with Anderlecht, who were knocked out of Europe as they finished last in Group C. Signing Biglia will also give the Gunners an option in the squad even for the Champions League, as Arsenal would be looking at him being potentially nominated as a new player for a team in the last 16 of this season’s Champions League squad, as per Uefa regulation 18.19.

With Marouane Chamakh being sent on loan to West Ham, Johan Djourou packed off to Hannover and a high possibility of Squillaci as well as Arshavin leaving the Emirates in January, Wenger has been on an off-loading spree. But, starting with the fixture against Manchester City, Arsenal will play 5 games in a period of 13 days. And the season will only get more intense once the Champions League knock-out rounds begin. And with no trophy in 8 years, the North London club have all to play for and to do so they desperately need to bolster their squad ahead of the testing time of the season.

Apart from a holding mid-fielder, the French boss would also want to fix a number of other areas of the game, that have been hurting the club time and time again this season. Starting with the acquisition of a solid centre back and a full back to shore up the creaky defence. And even though Arsenal have been a threat going forward all season, they have on multiple occasions lacked the finishing skills, something that can be addressed with buying a striker who is good in the box and has that knack of finishing even the half chances.

After the 2-2 draw in the FA Cup third round match against Swansea, Wenger said that “he hoped to sign one or two players” in this transfer period, but as always with him there are never any guarantees. If he is unsure about the quality of players on offer, he more often than not ends up signing no one.
