Despite the Gunners flying start to the season, Wojciech Szczesny has kept just one clean sheet in the league so far. His jittery display against Aston Villa on the opening day led to calls by some Arsenal fans for Arsene Wenger to replace his favoured shot stopper.
But things have dramatically changed for the better at the Emirates, the Gunners are currently top of the Premier League and also top their Champions League group. Both Szczesny and his team-mates appear to have put the opening day defeat behind them and been in brilliant form since their Villa defeat.
With a number of solid performance between the posts, in Szczesny have Arsenal finally found a replacement for the long departed Jens Lehmann?
The Polish international keeper is currently ranked as the seventh best keeper in the Premier League from the opening eight games. The 23-year-old has a current Performance Score of 136 while his fellow countryman Artur Boruc leads the way on 248.
His Performance Score in the Champions League is more impressive with a current score of 100 from his three games in the competition.
The Gunners keeper has made an average of 2.63 saves per game so far this season, with an average of 2.33 saves per goal conceded. Both averages are up on Szczesny’s 2012/13 stats where the he made an average of 1.68 saves per game and an average of 1.75 saves before conceding during his 25 league appearances.
Szczesny has an impressive average claim record of 98% and an average punch record of 38% from his opening eight Premier League games. In the Champions League the Arsenal keeper has an average claim success of 100% and hasn’t made a single punch in his opening three games.
The Poland number one had his best performance of the season in the Gunners 1-0 win over London rivals Tottenham. Szczesny kept his only league clean sheet of the season so far as recorded a performance score of 74, a vast improvement on his opening day score of -70.
Although questions will no doubt continued to be raised over the youngsters ability in between the Arsenal posts, Szczesny looks to be starting to repay the faith shown in him by his manager.
