Following Gerrard’s departure, Jordan Henderson took on the Liverpool armband. He has started well in his new role as club captain having produced a beautiful rabona pass to Adam Lallana who slotted the ball home against Thai All-Stars in Bangkok. Liverpool are touring Thailand, Malaysia and Australia as part of their pre-season tour.
Liverpool’s fringe players impressed against the Thai side. Lazar Markovic and Divock Origi both scored in the match for the Reds which ended 4-0 in their favour. Joe Gomez, Jordan Rossiter, Joe Maguire and Joao Carlos Teixeira all looked sharp for the Merseyside club which will be pleasing for the manager Brendan Rodgers.
Teixeira provided the assist for the Liverpool’s first goal, an accurately measured pass to Markovic who kept his cool to round off the keeper and finish into an empty net.
Mamadou Sakho put the visitors 2-0 ahead at half time with a powerful header from a Teixiera corner. Another new signing, Danny Ings found the back of the net, but was not awarded the goal on his debut because of an apparent foul by Sakho in the six-yard box on a Thai defender. James Milner also featured for the Reds since his arrival from Manchester City after coming on at half-time.
Liverpool fly to Brisbane next to play against Brisbane Roar on Friday at Suncorp Stadium.
The highlight of the game, however, was Henderson’s superb Rabona assist for Lallana’s goal. It provided the sort of spark that fans are looking for in such pre-season games.
