Jordan Henderson has issued a rallying call to his team-mates ahead of this Saturday’s top of the table clash between Arsenal and Liverpool.
The two sides have both been in tremendous form so far this season with only two points separating them as they sit first and third respectively. Following the emphatic victory over West Brom last weekend, Henderson knows a win (providing it betters Chelsea’s result at Newcastle that afternoon) would send them top of the Premier League and show the rest of the chasing pack that they are in fact genuine contenders.
“It would send out a message to the rest of the teams that we’re here and we mean business. But I think the main focus is going there and playing like we have been,” he told Liverpool’s official website.
“Going forward, we were exceptional,” Henderson added. “We’re just focusing on progressing as a team and we’re looking forward to the big game on Saturday.
“There are areas where we can improve, but we tend to keep that to ourselves and work on them out on the training pitch. But I think Saturday, overall, was a really good performance.
“We scored some great goals, but we’ve got to go there and, first and foremost, we’ve got to defend really well. Going forward we’ve been exceptional, so we need to keep that going.”
During the interview, the 23-year old who has played in several different positions this season including right wing-back, says that confidence is high at Anfield this season and the club is ‘on the up’.
“Confidence is very high at the minute,” the former Sunderland man added.
The midfielder believes, however, that the side can get even better under Brendan Rodgers and all the players are working hard to become better as a team in order to fulfil the club’s ambitions.
“We’ve started the season very well, but there’s still room for improvement and we’re still going to push and try and become better as a team.
“So hopefully we can keep doing what we’ve been doing and we can go to the Emirates and get a good result.
“They’re all tough games in the Premier League and Arsenal have been flying of late. But so have we, so I think it will be a good game to watch and hopefully we can get a good result.”
Although Liverpool must show some respect to the start their title rivals have made, they should not be in awe of the Gunners and ensure they go into the game wanting to take all three points. If they sit back and accept defend then they could find themselves dominated by Arsenal’s creativity, with the North London side creating 104 chances so far this season as their slick passing style has seen them amass 17 assists throughout the team, more than any other club in the top-flight.
