10. Argentina 6-3 Mexico
This match took place on 19th July, 1930 in Estadio Centenario, Montevideo. This was the 5th match of Group 1 and Mexico and Mexico’s final match, Mexico ended 4th in their group after losing all their 3 games in the 1930 FIFA World Cup.
9. Hungary 9-0 South Korea
This match took place on 17th June, 1954 in Hardturm Stadium, Zürich. This was the 2nd match of Group 2 but it took place at the same time as the first match of Group 2. Hungary had a dominant display over South Korea with Kocsis scoring a hattrick and Puskas and Palotas bagging a brace each. South Korea ended up finishing last in their group after losing every game played.
8. West Germany 7-2 Turkey
This match took place on 23rd June, 1954 in Hardturm Stadium, Zürich. This match was played between the other 2 teams in Group 2 in the 1954 FIFA World Cup. These 2 were competing for the 2nd spot in Group 2. Having both finished on the number of points, the 2nd spot was decided via a playoff game between West Germany and Turkey in which West Germany dominated and won 7-2.
7. France 6-3 West Germany
This match took place on 28th June, 1958 in Ullevi, Gothenburg. This was a third place playoff between France and West Germany. France dominated this game and French star Just Fontaine scored 4 times in this game to help France achieve a 6-3 victory over West Germany to secure third place in the 1958 FIFA World Cup.
6. Yugoslavia 9-0 Zaire (DR Congo)
This match took place on 18th June, 1974 in Parkstadion, Gelsenkirchen. This was both Zaire’s and Yugoslavia’s 2nd game of the group stage. Yugoslavia managed to get 9 past Zaire without getting hit back even once. Yugoslavia ended on the top of its group meanwhile Zaire lost all 3 games and finished at the bottom with 0 points.
5. France 7-3 Paraguay
This match took place on 8th June, 1958 in Idrottsparken, Norrköping. This was the first game of Group 2 in the 1958 FIFA World Cup. France put 7 past Paraguay with Just Fontaine scoring a hattrick. France ended up winning the group and although Paraguay put up a tough fight in the remaining games, it was not enough to help them qualify and they ended up finishing 3rd in Group 2.
4. Brazil 6-5 Poland
This match took place on 5th June, 1938 in Stade de la Meinau, Strasbourg. This was a Round of 16 game between Brazil and Poland which went into extra time. Polish star Wilimowski equalized in the 89’ of the game to complete his hattrick and make the score 4-4 and send the game into extra time. Wilimowski scored again in the 118’ of the extra time but scoring 4 goals was still not enough. Leonidas scored in the 93’ and 104’ of extra time to complete his hattrick and make the score Brazil 6-5 Poland after extra time.
3. Hungary 8-3 West Germany
This match took place on 20th June, 1954 in St. Jakob Stadium, Basel. Hungary had won their first game 9-0 against South Korea and were hungry for more. They managed to put 8 past West Germany. The match was not as easy as against South Korea and West Germany did manage to score 3 goals but overall Hungary still managed to win by a big margin of 8-3. Hungary finished on top of their group with a goal difference of +14.
2. Hungary 10-1 El Salvador
This match took place on 15th June, 1982 in Nuevo Estadio, Elche. This is one of the highest scoring matches in history and the biggest margin anyone has won by in a FIFA World Cup game, and although Hungary came out on top of this matchup, it was not enough to help them qualify for the knockout stages in the 1982 FIFA World Cup and they ended up finishing 3rd in their group.
- Austria 7-5 Switzerland
This match took place on 26th June, 1954 in Stade Olympique de la Pontaise, Lausanne. This was a quarterfinal matchup between Austria and Switzerland. Austria managed to win this game 7-5 owing to a hattrick from Theodore Wagner. This match had 12 goals scored in total, making it the highest scoring game in the history of FIFA World Cup.
