Yaya Sanogo scored his first goal for Arsenal and Alexis Sanchez continued his hot streak of goalscoring form to give Arsenal a 2-0 victory at home and ensure their progress to the knockout stages of the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League.
Sanogo had not scored in 19 appearances for Arsenal, but it took him only 76 seconds to give his team the lead on Wednesday night, after executing a neat one-two with Santi Cazorla.
Sven Bender’s right footed shot from outside the box three minutes before half-time was the closest that Borussia Dortmund came to restoring parity.
In the second half, it was the London side who looked more eager to add to the scoreline. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, at his mazy best, rattled the frame with a shot from outside the box in the 54th minute. Only two minutes later, it was Cazorla who again provided the assist for Alexis Sanchez to drive in a shot into the bottom right corner of Dortmund’s goal to give the Gunners a 2-0 lead.
The match was interrupted by several delays in the last quarter of the match, and neither team looked very enthusiastic to make a significant change to the scoreline.
With this result, Borussia Dortmund remain leaders of Group D with 12 points and Arsenal, with 10 points, maintain a 5-point lead over 3rd placed Anderlecht with only 3 more points up for grabs in the group stages.
