Arsenal celebrated their already-ensured progress to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League by convincingly trouncing Galatasaray. Even though Borussia Dortmund only managed a draw against Anderlecht in the other match of the group, Arsenal still qualify as Group D runners-up due to an inferior goal difference.
Aaron Ramsey, who has had a difficult time this season, scored two goals and set up another in a brilliant 45 minutes of football. He was taken off in the second half because of persisting concerns about his hamstring, but the Welshman was back to his supreme best in the time on the field.
Ramsey’s second goal was a divine left-footed volley from 30 yards out into the opposite top corner of the net, and is already being talked about as the highlight of Arsenal’s European campaign.
Arsenal ran their opponents ragged, with Lukas Podolski hitting the bar, Yaya Sanogo’s shot being blocked and Joel Campbell’s shot being deflected. Wesley Sneijder scored a goal for the hosts with a free kick, but the result had been a foregone conclusion for some time.
On an altogether happy day for Arsenal, first-choice right-back Mathieu Debuchy was back in action after a three-month lay-off as well.
