A Jack Wilshere brace and a late winner from captain Wayne Rooney gave England a 3-2 win over Slovenia in their Group E Euro 2016 qualifier in Ljubljana on Sunday night. The win means that England kept their perfect record in the group intact having won all six games so far.
But it was Slovenia who took the lead through Milivoje Novakovic in the 37th minute when he was released by Josip Ilicic with a through ball down the right side. Novakovic beat the high defensive line and took a shot from the right side of the box to slide it past Joe Hart into the bottom-left corner.
Slovenia went into half time with the lead, but Jack Wilshere equalized in the 57th minute with a shot from outside the box. Slovenia goalkeeper Samir Handanovic dived to his right but failed to save the shot as it sailed into the top corner of the net.
The 23-year-old Arsenal midfielder then gave England the lead with a similar shot when Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana combined to set him up. Lallana’s back heel found Wilshere running behind him and he took one touch to set himself up for the shot. This time, Handanovic did not budge and just watched it go into the top corner of the net.
Slovenia then made it 2-2 when Bojan Jokic’s cross found Nejc Pecnik in the box and he headed home. He rose above the challenge of Kieran Gibbs and Joe Hart reacted too late to make a save.
But Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney then ensured England would go home with all three points when England intercepted a ball and launched a counter-attack. The ball found its way to the centre of the box and a sprinting Rooney took the shot first-time and found the bottom left corner as Handanovic went the wrong way.
