Real Madrid extended their lead over Barcelona to four points as they registered a comfortable 2-1 victory against Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. Carlo Ancelloti’s men were in clinical form against Unai Emery’s side with first-half goals from James Rodriguez and Jese Rodriguez ensured that the European Champions record their 8th consecutive victory at the Bernabeu in La-Liga.
Los Blancos took an early lead when James headed in Marcelo's cross to score his 8th league goal of the season. However, Sevilla arguably enjoyed the first half-hour, as Vitolo, Vicente Iborra and Grzegorz Krychowiak all went close to finding the net. The first half saw injuries to Sergio Ramos and James Rodriguez, with the former now sidelined for three weeks with hamstring injury.
Also, Sevilla goalkeeper Beto suffered a potential head injury in a collision with Karim Benzema and was replaced with 22-year old Sergio Rico. Real took the lead soon with Jese, who scored his first goal of the season, giving Sevilla a mountain to climb.
Iago Aspas managed to pull one back for the visitors with 10 minutes to go in the second half, but Los Blancos held on to the lead and ensured that they open up a healthy advantage in the title race.
