But in the final minute of added on time in extra time, Kolo Toure fouled Patrick Bamford who stepped up and converted the penalty.
30 penalties taken in the penalty shootout
Both Liverpool and Middlesbrough missed one kick each in the firs five spot kicks before going on a scoring spree till the score was 14-13. Players had to retake penalties after all had taken at least one kick, including the goalkeeper.
That was when Adomah buckled under the pressure and sent his penalty kick wide.
The 14-13 scoreline only equalled the record set in 2011 when Leyton Orient were beaten by Dagenham & Redbridge. However, the record for the most successful consecutive penalties in a shootout in English football is 29 (Brockenhurst 14-14 Andover – Hampshire Senior Cup 2013).
