The Netherlands beat Latvia 6-0 in Amsterdam with Arjen Robben and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar both grabbing a brace while Robin van Persie and Jeffrey Bruma also scoring a goal each.
Under fire Oranje coach Guus Hiddink had earlier threatened to resign if the Dutch side failed to beat Latvia. The Netherlands are still third in Group A with only six points, behind Czech Republic (12 points) and Iceland (9 points).
Van Persie scored the first goal with a header from Robben after the Manchester United striker released the winger with a through ball. Robben then scored the second with a trademark Robben goal by cutting in from the left and unleashing a strike that beat the goalkeeper. Huntelaar then scored from close range to add the third to make it 3-0 at half time.
In the second half, Robben almost scored with a fantastic free kick that hit the crossbar. Bruma then added a fifth with a tap-in from a corner kick after Van Persie flicked on a Sneijder cross.
Robben then did it again with a similar move from the first half to beat the goalkeeper and score his second. Huntelaar added the sixth with a low shot from the edge of the box.
However, the game wasn’t a perfect outing for the Oranje as Daley Blind came off injured with a leg injury and is expected to be out for six weeks.
