Paraguay came back to haunt Brazil as the Selecao yet again lost a penalty shootout, much like how they lost the shootout against the same opponents in 2011 Copa America quarter-final.
Robinho had given Brazil the lead in the 15th minute after tucking away a cross from Barcelona right-back Dani Alves. But Paraguay equalised in the second half after they were awarded a penalty thanks to a Thiago Silva handball in the penalty box. Derlis Gonzalez stepped up to take the spot-kick and levelled terms. With both sides level after full-time, the match went into the penalty shootout.
In the 2011 shootout, Brazil had failed to convert a single penalty against Paraguay. This time, however, they managed to get three on target although it was not enough in the end. Everton Ribeiro and Douglas Costa were the ones who missed the target for Brazil. Paraguay also missed one chance as skipper Roque Santa Cruz failed convert his chance.
But Gonzalez converted from the spot again after scoring in normal time to send Paraguay into the semi-final. Paraguay will be facing Lionel Messi and company for a place in the final.
