Peru beat Paraguay 2-0 in the third-place match at the 2015 Copa America on Friday night in Concepcion, Chile. This is the second consecutive time they have finished third after they beat Venezuela in the 2011 third-place match. Paraguay were the runners-up in 2011.
Goals from Andre Carrillo and Paolo Guerrero gave Peru the win as Ricardo Gareca’s side won the match with no real threat on their goal. Guerrero now has four goals and is a contender for the Golden Boot. He could make it back-to-back Golden Boot wins after he netted five in the 2011 edition although Chile's Eduardo Vargas (also on 4 goals) could score more in the final.
The game didn’t get off to an electric start expected in a third-place game as both teams sat back. It was only immediately after the break that Peru broke the deadlock.
In the 48th minute, a Peru corner won by Luis Advincula. It was initially headed away from the six-yard box but Carrillo volleyed home from the edge of the box with Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar failing to make a save.
Paraguay had a chance to score in the 68th minute but were thwarted thanks to some fantastic defending from Carlos Ascues. Benitez almost made it 1-1 before Ascues slid in to make a successful last-ditch tackle which saw the ball hit the post and away from danger.
Peru then doubled the lead in the 89th minute and put the game out of reach as Carrillo made a run to beat two defenders before releasing Sanchez on the right flank. His pass into the box found Guerrero who took his shot first time and bundled it past goalkeeper Villar. The goal was also of some historic significance as he is now only one goal behind Peru legend Teofilo Cubillas in the all-time top goalscorers list for the country (26).
