FC Porto made sure they have a great chance of going through to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League by defeating Bayern Munich 3-1 in the first leg of their quarter-final match.
The home side put on an exhibition of pressing and fast football, and capitalised on every Bayern error to put three goals past Manuel Neuer in the Munich goal. A Ricardo Quaresma double put the Portuguese team up two goals very early. Thiago Alcantara pulled one back for the away team, but Jackson Martinez’s goal doubled the lead again, sealing the victory for Porto.
All of Porto’s goals came from individual mistakes from the Bayern Munich players, with Xabi Alonso at fault for the first, as he was caught on the ball by Martinez, who was then adjudged to have been brought down by Neuer, though it looked like he had got the ball. Quaresma made no mistake from the spot.
Dante was caught dawdling for the second, as Ricardo Quaresma again intercepted and finished calmly past the German goalkeeper. Thiago gave Pep Guardiola’s side a ray of hope by converting from Jerome Boateng’s cross. Ironically, it was Boateng who misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing Martinez to go past Neuer and finish into an empty net.
