Liverpool beat Olympiacos 1-0 to get their Guiness International Champions Cup campaign – a pre-season tournament – off to winning start in Chicago. Although Raheem Sterling scored just five minutes after kickoff, Liverpool couldn’t build on the early lead as they were made to grind out the result till the very last minute by the buoyant Greek side, who narrowly missing out on a second-half equaliser.
The match started off on a very promising note with Sterling scoring from a rebound off a Daniel Strurridge long-range effort. Making their Reds’ debuts were new signings Emre Can and Lazar Markovic. The latter, a £20m summer recruit from Benfica displayed some good touches and even came close to doubling the lead with a solo effort.
Brendan Rodgers was dealt a body blow before the match as Adam Lallana, a £25m purchase from Southampton, injured knee ligaments in training and was ruled out for atleast the next six weeks.
Liverpool’s next match is against the reigning Premier League champions Manchester City in New York on Wednesday, who easily brushed past a rather poor AC MIlan side 5-1.
