In what was a night of upsets in La Liga, Real Sociedad defeated Barcelona 1-0 thanks to a second minute own goal from Jordi Alba, who headed the ball past his keeper Claudio Bravo. The loss meant that Barcelona failed to make up ground on Real Madrid, who lost earlier to Valencia 2-1.
The goal came from a set-piece as apart from that, the match was dominated by Barcelona, but they couldn’t make much use of the ~ 73% possession they had. Luis Enrique, the manager of the Catalans chose to leave both Messi and Neymar on the bench preferring to save them for bigger matches coming up, and the decision clearly backfired.
The win was Sociedad’s third since former Manchester United manager David Moyes has taken over as manager. The Basque club have now won three, drawn four and lost only one of their matches under the Scotsman.
This was Real’s fourth win of the season and what is interesting to note is that three of those wins have come against Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Another odd stat to come out of this match was that this was Jordi Alba’s second own goal of the season, more than any other player in the league.
