England beat Scotland 1-3 at Celtic Park with captain Wayne Rooney grabbing a brace while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also scored a goal. The two goals took Rooney to 46 goals for England – three short of Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time record of 49 goals.
This was England’s first visit to Glasgow in 15 years. The result was also their sixth consecutive win and Roy Hodgson was pleased with his side’s performance and even praised their defensive play.
Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring when his club teammate Jack Wilshere found him with a cross from deep into the centre of the box. Oxlade-Chamberlain made a run into the box between the defenders and headed the ball past goalkeeper David Marshall.
Wayne Rooney then made it 2-0 with a header when the Scottish defence failed to clear the ball. A botched clearance saw the ball loop up to Rooney who headed home from just outside the six-yard box.
Defender Andy Robertson then gave Scotland some hope when he took a left footed shot in the 83rd minute from the centre of the box after a neat one-two with Johnny Russell. But the glimmer of hope faded away when England scored a third with a beautifully constructed team goal that saw six players combine. Rooney scored the goal that sealed the result in the 85th minute with Adam Lallana getting the assist.
