Arsenal was visiting St. Mary’s for New Year’s day. This fixture was of utmost importance to Ronald Koeman and Arsene Wenger as they were tied on points. A victory for either side meant they would go on to the final Champions League spot.
Southampton 1-0 Arsenal (Sadio Mane 34’)
Southampton counter-attacked through James Ward-Prowse who found Mane and Szczesny charged out. Mane opens his body up and curls it delightfully into the goal. Might have taken a touch of Mertesacker.
Southampton 2-0 Arsenal (Dusan Tadic 34’)
Wanyama’s ball down field was beautifully brought under control by Steven Davis. His cross was booted by Szczesny into the path of Tadic. Calmly slotted home before onrushing defenders arrived.
This win takes Southampton into fourth. One point behind third-placed Manchester United after the latter drew at the Britannia Stadium. If Tottenham beat Chelsea Arsenal will be sixth, one point above West Ham.
