Wayne Rooney scored the winner in his first match as England captain as he slotted home a penalty against Norway at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night.
It wasn’t exactly a cracking atmosphere for this international friendly as only a little over 40,000 fans turned up to watch this game, with memories of an early World Cup exit still fresh in their minds.
The official number was 40,181 – the lowest attendance at the new Wembley Stadium.
There were a couple of bright sparks in the match, first with Liverpool boys Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling linking up forllowed by Arsenal youngsters Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
England scored thanks to a Wayne Rooney penalty after Sterling was brought down in the box. Rooney stepped up and fired a shot into the left corner, scoring in spite of the goalkeeper diving the right way.
This was Rooney’s 41st goal for England, and it took him past Michael Owen. He is now behind only Sir Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker and Jimmy Greaves.
