Manchester United had to see off stiff resistance from League One side Yeovil Town at the 9,500 capacity Huish Park to advance to the 4th Round of the FA Cup. Louis van Gaal made six changes from the last outing, although Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao started.
United have lost just one of their last 40 FA Cup matches against lower league opponents, but were made to labour to sustain their record by their lowly opponents. Yeovil matched the Red Devils for the first hour of the match, and could have even taken the lead if David de Gea had not been alert to keep out Kieffer Moore’s attempts on goal.
United worked their way into gaining ascendancy of proceedings as the match wore on, and Ander Herrera gave the away side the lead in the 64th minute with a wonder strike from outside the box into the top right corner. The Spanish midfielder was promptly shown an yellow card for excessive celebration following the goal, but the goal meant that United could rest a lot easier.
Angel di Maria, who made a return from injury by coming on for Falcao in the 60th minute, finished off a quick counter attack to double the lead in the 90th minute after Wayne Rooney had provided an accurate through ball.
