After a season whose fate was decided in the dying minutes, Manchester City have been crowned champions of England for the first time in 44 years. 38 matches are played by each team over a span of 9 months but only a handful of those matches really stand out, those being the ones against the top teams vying for the trophy, 10 to be precise.
Before every season kicks off, it’s always interesting to predict the outcomes of matches between the top teams. These are the matches everyone looks forward to and it goes a great deal in deciding where the trophy will end up at the end of the season. The teams that manage to pluck points out of the big games generally end up winning the league. So here we see how the top teams fared amongst each other and how it compares with their overall finish in the league.
TEAM | P | W | D | L | GF | GA | GD | POINTS | LEAGUE RANK |
Manchester City | 10 | 7 | 1 | 2 | 23 | 9 | +14 | 22 | 1st |
Manchester United | 10 | 6 | 2 | 2 | 26 | 17 | +9 | 20 | 2nd |
Arsenal | 10 | 4 | 1 | 5 | 17 | 21 | -4 | 13 | 3rd |
Liverpool | 10 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 12 | 15 | -3 | 12 | 8th |
Tottenham | 10 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 13 | 21 | -8 | 9 | 4th |
Chelsea | 10 | 1 | 4 | 5 | 13 | 21 | -8 | 7 | 6th |
The top three teams finished in the rightful order. Liverpool managed to cause trouble to their enviable counterparts but had a terrible season otherwise, losing to teams much inferior to them. Tottenham lost enough points when contesting against the top teams but managed to keep their season alive by winning their lower-profile games. Chelsea surprisingly mustered only one victory against the top teams, picking up fewer points than even Tottenham and hence, resulting in an unimpressive 6th place finish.
All said and done, Manchester City clearly are the rightful owners of the trophy this season. They managed to rake up the most points against the top teams including two victories against great rivals Manchester united.

Top teams need top players, and the players that perform in big matches are regarded priceless by their respective teams. Although Wayne Rooney missed out on the Golden Boot this season, he did manage to score 2 goals more than Van Persie against the top teams, averaging a goal a game. Sergio Aguero, however, could only muster 3 goals against the top teams but his 20 other goals including a priceless one against QPR in the last minute of the season makes him indispensable to Manchester City.
