Former Manchester United striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez once opened up about refusing to celebrate a goal at Old Trafford. The Mexican forward recalled having an argument with legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. In retaliation, he scored without a trademark celebration.
During a slight slump in form in the 2011-12 season, Chicharito was struggling to score, which led to a reaction from his manager. He explained the events that took place, saying (via Manchester Evening News):
"We were playing against Newcastle. I had a lot of options and he told me, 'You needed to score.' I wanted to say to him: 'Do you think I wanted to miss those options? I want to score them, of course! I don’t want to miss them.'"
Eventually, Chicharito found the net in the 49th minute, after the ball bounced kindly for him. However, the Mexican striker was not pleased about the conversation with Ferguson, and he decided against celebrating:
"I remember I then scored a goal, they went to kick it out and I just covered it, it hit my thigh and it went in. I didn't even celebrate. I was completely p****d off," he added.
Manchester United went on to draw the game 1-1, which took place at Old Trafford on November 26, 2011, as Demba Ba scored a penalty for Newcastle United in the 64th minute. Magpies player Jonas Gutierrez picked up a red card in the 79th minute, but the Red Devils failed to capitalize on this.
Chicharito went on to score 59 goals and provide 17 assists in the 157 games he played for Manchester United in the four years he spent at the club.
Manchester United legend questions club's decision to sell academy graduate
Manchester United legend Jaap Stam has questioned the Red Devils' decision to sell academy graduate Scott McTominay in the summer transfer window. The 28-year-old joined the club in 2002 at the age of six, breaking into the first team in 2017.
However, after playing 255 games for the Red Devils (29 goals and eight assists), he was sold to Napoli earlier this year. He has shone for the Italian giants, helping them reach second place in Serie A with 38 points from 17 games. Jaap Stam believes he should never have been sold. He told Sport Lens (via Metro):
"He scored goals and had a big impact and those are the players you don’t want to lose as a football club. Leaving might’ve been a good step for him... but he may well have wanted to stay... Overall I think selling him was a bad call at United. Sometimes you have to make tough decisions as a club and I understand that, but I wouldn’t have been keen to sell McTominay."
The Napoli midfielder has scored four goals and provided three assists for the Italian club in 19 games across competitions this season.
