The three years that Jose Mourinho was in charge of as manager of Real Madrid was toxic to say the least, with constant negative publicity and dressing room controversies and rows with the board.
But in spite of all these spirit dampeners, the newly appointed Chelsea manager, in a no-holds-barred interview, insisted that he had absolutely no regrets about the time spent with the Spanish giants.
He even borrowed a line from legendary US singer Frank Sinatra when he said: “I did it my way.”
He dismissed the merciless jeers of the vast majority of the Bernabeu crowd, on the day of his last match at home to Osasuna on Saturday, a 4-2 win following Barcelona’s runaway title success, as an orchestrated and “unethical” campaign against him.
In his televised interview by popular TV show Punto Pelota, he defended his record and methods while conceding that his position had become untenable — as it was no secret that he had lost control of the dressing room.
There was also a power struggle with technical director and club legend Jorge Valdano; bust-ups with captains Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and even fellow Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo; and fall-outs with players such as Karim Benzema, Mesut Ozil and, more recently, Pepe.
Mourinho said: “I left because I think it’s the best for me and the actual situation at the club.
“If I started next season, I would start with a series of problems that are dragging on.
“On Saturday, you had the maximum example of the dynamic and the objective of those problems.
“So it’s best for everyone, including the players, who are the most important.
“They have to have the support and tranquility of being able to start a new project with a new coach to whom I, — whoever it is, although it seems it will be Carlo Ancelotti — wish the best.”
He went on to add later, “It’s not worth it to regret anything. It’s terminated, it’s finished.”
