What’s The Story?
Star goalkeeper Debjit Majumder is finding it difficult to forget his former club Mohun Bagan. Till last season, Majumder was with the Mariners in the I-League, and this year he will be donning the colours of ATK in the ISL.
The context
Majumder bloomed in Bagan colours and went on to become one of the best goalkeepers in the country. He had also won the Federation Cup and I-League titles with Mohun Bagan and received the Best goalkeeper award.
He became very popular among the Bagan fans as his hands saved the Mariners on many occasions. He played for Bagan from 2014 to 2017 and earned accolades from all corners. Mohun Bagan gave him his identity before he got noticed by ISL clubs.
The heart of the matter
He has a special message for his former club ahead of the I-League. He wished Mohun Bagan on his Facebook page ahead of their opening game against Minerva Punjab FC on Saturday.
Not only Majumder, but another footballer from ATK who played for the other Kolkata giant East Bengal, is facing the same pang. Robin Singh, the charismatic striker will be playing for ATK this season but his heart still beats for the Red and Golds.
According to him, East Bengal gave him the opportunity to shine and he carries great memories with him. Robin said that he would love to go for an I-League match to support his former team if he gets the time. Both Majumder and Robin showed that their hearts are still with their old clubs.
What’s next?
Both these footballers will now play for ATK, and cannot go back and play in the I-League. Both the leagues will run simultaneously this year and it goes without saying that apart from focussing on their own game, these two will surely keep an eye on the I-League standings.
Author’s take:
This is a sign that the two big clubs from Kolkata, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, need to be included in the ISL as soon as possible.
