The writing was already on the wall after Sanjoy Sen stepped down as the head coach of Mohun Bagan and as expected, the club management decided to hand over the charge of the team to assistant coach, Shankarlal Chakraborty.
Incidentally, Sen had himself decided to part ways with the century-old club after a series of poor results, which saw the Mariners garner just 10 points from seven games. After Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Chennai City FC at Mohun Bagan’s home ground in Maidan, Sen announced in the press conference that he was no longer willing to carry on with the responsibility of guiding the team.
Chakraborty has been Sen’s deputy for a long time and even acted as the stand-in coach in the latest edition of Calcutta Football League (CFL). He was on the cusp of guiding the Mariners to a CFL title but a 2-2 draw in the last game of the tournament against East Bengal, poured water on the hopes and aspirations of the Mohun Bagan fans.
Chakraborty has been associated with the Green and Maroon brigade since July 2014. He is expected to meet media personnel on Thursday after presiding over a training session in the morning.
