#1 Mohun Bagan 2-1 East Bengal (I-League, April 9, 2017)
There was a long lasting myth about Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri until this match - East Bengal never lost a Derby on this ground. The north-eastern town of West Bengal boast a major support base for East Bengal.
The match witnessed the famous Sten Gun celebration from Mohun Bagan’s winger Sony Norde. The Haitian put his team ahead through a superbly taken free-kick on 35th minute. This was the first and only goal for Norde in a Kolkata Derby so far.
Moments later, rookie Azharuddin Mullick doubled the lead. It was a howler from East Bengal goalkeeper TP Rehenesh, who was well ahead of his line and all it took was chip from Mullick to put the ball on the back of the net.
A tussle between Willis Plaza and Anas Edathodika saw the Trinidadian given marching order as East Bengal’s fortune turned from bad to worse. With clocks ticking down, East Bengal failed to get a grip on the match and Ivan Bukenya’s late goal wasn’t enough for the secure at least a point.
The myth was broken finally.
