What's the story?

Quess East Bengal Football Club confirmed the signing of former Mexican International Enrique Esqueda for the upcoming 2018/19 I-League season. The Kolkata giants have been pretty busy in the transfer market this summer and previously signed Costa Rican defender Johnny Acosta who played in the 2018 World Cup and also roped in Spanish stopper Borja Gomez Perez.

In case you didn't know...

The Red and Gold brigade has been making huge investments since they started a partnership with corporate heavyweights Quess Corp Pvt Ltd a couple of months back. With the new bosses taking charge, the management has left no stones unturned to build up a formidable team on their hunt for a maiden I-League trophy.

The heart of the matter

After a long spell with the famous Mexican outfits Club America in which he played 107 matches, Enrique plied his trade for several other clubs in the Central American country throughout his career so far. Earlier in 2018, he represented for Arka Gdynia, a Polish club until he decided to join East Bengal. Enrique played 9 matches for the Mexican National football team.

The Maidan based team is currently playing in the Calcutta Football League and is at the top of the standings along with arch-rivals Mohun Bagan. The much talked about ‘Kolkata Derby’ featuring the two teams is scheduled to be played on Sunday, September 2. It is likely that foreign recruit Johnny Acosta will make his debut in that fixture.

What's next?

I-League is a trophy that has eluded the club; East Bengal has been very close a couple of times but never quite made it. After finishing at the fourth position last season, the team will aim no less than a championship win in the upcoming season much to the delight of their passionate supporters across the nation.

With a strong squad comprising of strong Indian and foreigners, East Bengal can hope for a fruitful season. The 2018/19 I-League season will begin in the last week of October.
