Barasat (West Bengal), Jan 16 (IANS) Defending champions Mohun Bagan climbed atop the charts with a 4-2 win over Salgaocar FC in the I-league football tournament here on Saturday.
Katsumi Yusa, Cornell Glen, Brazilian star debutant Luciano Sabrosa and Balwant Singh struck for the winners who now have six points from two matches.
The Goans tried to stage a late rally with goals from Darryl Duffy and Gurjinder Kumar, but that was not enough to get even with Bagan in the Vidyasagar Stadium encounter.
The Kolkata giants led 3-0 at half-time.
Bagan took the lead as early as the ninth minute as Japanese midfielder Katsumi headed in after Salgaocar goalkeeper Karanjit Singh could not properly clear Dhanchandra Singh's throw.
Glenn doubled the lead in the 28th minute from a penalty, that was awarded after the Trinidadian was brought down inside the Salgaocar box by Gurjinder Kumar.
Bagan further consolidated their position five minutes later, with Sabrosa striking his first goal for the Mariners by letting go a wonderful header following Katsumi's corner kick.
Bagan made an early impact in the second half when Katsumi curled the ball towards Balwant, who headed into the net. The game was 48 minutes old, and Bagan were ahead 4-0.
But as the Bagan supporters were hoping for a very big win, Salgaocar tried to claw back into the game.
Duffy pulled one back in the 69th minute by finishing off a Jackichand Singh cross.
Gurjinder, who had conceded a penalty earlier in the game, tried to salvage his reputation four minutes from close as his screamer went in.
