Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri started a new chapter in his life, as he tied the knot with his long-time girlfriend Sonam Bhattacharya, in Kolkata, on Monday.
The striker, who has been on prolific form for India over the last couple of years had been dating Sonam, who is also the daughter of Mohun Bagan football legend Subrata Bhattacharya for some time.
Chhetri had had a difficult start to the ongoing Indian Super League season, scoring just one goal from Bengaluru FC’s opening three games. Despite his poor form, though, Bengaluru FC are currently on the top of the ISL table, with six points to their name, after two wins and one loss. They lead the likes of Chennaiyin Fc, FC Pune City, and FC Goa on goal difference.
On the other hand, Chhetri has had an equally difficult time in planning his wedding, which he has had to slot in bits and pieces, in between the hectic schedule of the Indian football calendar. The ISL is set to go on for five months this time, and the Blues’ skipper has arranged his wedding cleverly, holding the functions on days that do not clash with his matchdays.
While the Sangeet ceremony was held on November 20 in Gurgaon, the wedding ceremony has been scheduled for today, (December 4), in Kolkata, where the Bhattacharya family resides. Interestingly, this wedding is being held at a time when Bengaluru FC have a week-long break. To add to that, Monday is a break-day for all ISL teams.
It was truly a marriage of different cultures, as Sunil Chhetri arrived in traditional Nepali attire, on horseback, but went through the marriage ceremony in the Bengali manner.
Being the Indian captain, Chhetri showed that he truly is ready to adorn any culture from the country, that comes his way. During his wedding, when one of the guests asked him about the different Nepali and Bengali attires, Chhetri had a rather witty reply.
“Nepali, Bengali (attires), put them all on me. If there’s anything else, put that on me as well,” said Chhetri with his tongue firmly between his cheek.
