The India women’s national team moved up one spot to 50 in the latest FIFA Rankings, which came out on Friday. They are 50th among 175 nations now and remain 11th in Asia.
India last played in May 2013 at the 2014 Asian Cup qualifiers and managed just one point from three games. They were beaten by higher-ranked Myanmar and Chinese Taipei and then held hosts Palestine to a 1-1 draw.
This is the second time that they have been placed in the top 50 since the Rankings were introduced in 2003 but they need more international exposure.
On a positive note there are talks of organising a national domestic women’s league next year while the senior national championship was held for the first time since 2011 this year in Assam with Manipur beating Orissa in the final.
India will be featuring in the women’s SAFF Championship in Pakistan in November later this year and they are eyeing a hattrick of titles.
