The Assam-born was called into the Asian Cup squad despite his poor form for Kerala Blasters. He featured in all the three matches but was substituted twice due to his poor performances in the game.
Before the tournament, Narzary had spoken about scoring goals in the national colour. “Obviously, I have not scored that many goals in the India shirt. That motivates me to work harder, and improve my scoring abilities. It’s up to me to work hard, improve myself, and prove to the coach that I deserved to be in that list of 23,” he had said.
However, he not only failed to do so but his performance forced Constantine to replace him with another player who could show more intent when the team is attacking. Narzary only got place in the first XI as Constantine decided to play Ashique Kuruniyan as a striker and Lallianzuala Chhangte missed the bus.
Switching from Kerala Blasters to Chennaiyin FC midway into the season also didn’t work for Narzary. He played 14 games in the ISL-5 but scored and assisted only once, which is not sufficient for an attacking midfielder.
Stimac could recall Chhangte to replace Narzary in the national team.
