Indian football is in mourning after a local footballer in Mizoram died tragically after he fell while performing a somersault during a goal celebration.
Peter Biaksangzuala, a midfielder at Bethlehem Vengthlang FC, passed away from the tragic injury he suffered last week.
The 23-year-old had scored in the 62nd minute of the game and went on to perform a somersault. But the attempted trick went wrong and the player fell awkwardly on his head and neck.
He was immediately rushed to a hospital nearby where scans showed that he had damaged his spinal cord. He spent five days in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) before succumbing to his injuries.
A source said he was trying to imitate Germany legend Miroslav Klose’s goal celebration when he fell.
Lalnghinglova Hmar, the Mizoram Football Association’s (MFA) secretary, said: “This is indeed very shocking for all of us.”
The club revealed that they would retire the Peter’s number 21 jersey.
The injury takes place after the equalizer at 2:22.
