Reports state that it is Manchester City‘s plan to replace Etihad Airways as their shirt sponsor with a new sponsor. The search however is not turning out to be a fruitful venture owing to a degree of confusion that the club has found itself in, especially after Roberto Mancini’s sacking.
The reason why City want to replace Etihad as shirt sponsors is so that they can gain extra revenue, which they need if they are to keep up with clubs like United, Chelsea and Arsenal. Even after the replacement, Etihad’s cash is expected to go into sponsoring the stadium, academy and other areas.
The club’s American chief commercial and operating officer, Tom Glick, is reportedly trying to lure sponsors with the help of external consultants and agencies. One source, however, stated that City ‘are not that easy sell than was perhaps imagined’.
An inside source reportedly said: “Developments over the past four or five weeks haven’t been helpful. The defence of the title ending so early and with no real fight was bad enough, especially after failure to progress past the Champions League group stage. Then the manager’s been fired in embarrassing circumstances after failing to win matches that were expected to be won, like FA Cup final.”
Etihad, their current sponsors are to remain a significant part of the club.
A source reportedly said “Etihad will stay as a major commercial partner because they are effectively helping to underwrite the club“.
