International round-up: Chelsea players on duty

Gary Cahill on England duty

The last international break of the calendar year has come to a close with some decent results and performances from the Chelsea players.

Tuesday night saw several Blues feature for their respective national sides, and overall it was a good night for most of them.

Starting in Glasgow, where Gary Cahill featured for England in the match against Scotland. The centre half played the opening 45 minutes in England’s 3-1 win at Celtic Park.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring before the break, before Wayne Rooney scored twice and Andrew Robertson pulled one back for Scotland.

During his half on the pitch, Cahill was not tested properly, much due to a great team effort by England. At half time he was replaced by Phil Jagielka to get some much needed rest ahead of a busy schedule in the Premier League and Champions League in the coming weeks.

Brazil had three Chelsea players starting in their 2-1 win in Austria. Oscar and Filipe Luis both got assists, while Willian’s night was rather quiet.

Luis got the whole match in his preferred left back position, but both Oscar and Willian were replaced in the second half.

Cesar Azpilicueta played the full 90 minutes in Spain’s 0-1 defeat at home to World Champions Germany. He was the only Chelsea player to feature as Cesc Fabregas and Andre Schurrle withdrew from the squads last week. Diego Costa was left out.

Serbia didn’t have a great night on Friday as they were beaten at home by Denmark, but they pulled back on Tuesday night by winning 2-0 in Greece. Both Nemanja Matic and Branislav Ivanovic played the full match.

On Sunday night, Belgium were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Wales in their Euro Qualifier. Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard both played 90 minutes in Brussels. While Courtois wasn’t tested properly in the duration of the match, Hazard was unable to help Belgium score a vital goal.

Petr Cech was also involved in a Euro Qualifier on Sunday. Iceland took the lead in the early stages of the match, but the Czech Republic fought back and claimed the win 2-1. Cech could arguably have done better ahead of Iceland’s goal when he failed to win an aerial battle in his own box.

Now it is back to the Premier League where we face West Bromwich on Saturday.
