Interview with Arata Izumi: ‘I am slowly learning the Indian National Anthem’

Pune FC midfielder Arata Izumi made history on Tuesday as he became the first PIO (Player of Indian Origin) to earn a call-up to the Indian national team as he was included in the 23-man squad for next month’s international friendly against Palestine. This is only the start though of this amazing story and is likely to benefit both Arata and Team India.

Arata was born to an Indian father and Japanese mother in Japan and after starting his professional career in Singapore and then in Japan, he moved to India in 2006 and joined East Bengal. Seven years on, he is one of the best technically gifted midfielders in the I-League and thus would add plenty of quality to the national team.

Looking back on his arrival in India, Arata, who officially became an Indian citizen in August last year, revealed to Sportskeeda that one of the main reasons behind his move was the possibility of representing India at international level because of his Indian connection.

“Yes certainly that was one of the main reasons. I knew I could have a chance to play for India one day and so after playing a few years I took the decision of applying for Indian citizenship. I am delighted that now I will be able to realise that dream,” an ecstatic Arata stated.

Arata, who also has an Indian name Neelkanth Khambholja, took time to settle at East Bengal and left after just one season to join Mahindra United, where he spent two years and won the Durand Cup. But it was at Pune FC that the Japanese-born medio really caught the attention and established into a versatile goal-scoring midfielder.

“I owe a lot to Pune FC because they have played a major part in my career. It is the most professional club in India and they provide the ideal environment for players to excel,” he said.

The 30-year-old has completely embraced the Indian culture as well and is married to an Indian, Shweta Manerikar. So has he learnt the Indian National Anthem yet? “I am slowly learning it and will soon get there. I know the tune very well but just have to remember each word properly,” he answered with a smile.

India vs Japan will be Arata’s dream match naturally but he promised to sing only India’s national anthem in such a situation. “Hopefully that match will happen sometime soon and I will definitely only sing the Indian national anthem.”

That match could happen if India qualifies for the 2015 Asian Cup and that will be the priority for Wim Koevermans’ side. Arata believes the style of play would suit him perfectly and spoke about his love for India.

“I think I have to adapt to any style of play but of course I like the current style a lot. I love India and the people here because from day one I have been made to feel at home. It has been very eventful and enjoyable here and I want to give everything when I am wearing the blue jersey,” he opined.

Arata’s inclusion was appreciated publicly by India captain Sunil Chhetri, who tweeted, “Arata Izumi .. Congratulations mate.. I know you wanted this since long.. Looking forward to see u at the camp ..”

The Pune FC player revealed that he had been following the national team ever since he came to India and is good friends with several members of the team.

“I used to watch them a lot and always supported the national team. It’s great to get encouragement from such a great player (Sunil Chhetri). I know most of the players and have many good friends like Subrata (Pal), Nirmal (Chettri),” Arata said.

Arata is a fan favourite in Pune and could soon become a household name throughout the country and more importantly his historical inclusion could see more PIOs playing for India in future.

“I would be proud if that happens,” he concluded.
