Seminlen Doungel, or commonly referred to as “Len” by the Indian football fans has attracted a lot of eyes over the past few years. The exciting youngster who started his career with JCT football club as a teenager has now come a long way. From representing the likes of East Bengal to sharing the same space with World cup winners Joan Capdevila and Roberto Carlos in the span of two years, the young Manipuri boy has seen his career grow by leaps and bounds.
Despite the occasional injury setbacks, Len has not let that affect his dreams and now touted by many as the rising star of Indian football, the 21-year old is looking forward to achieving even bigger things as he matures as a footballer.
Sportskeeda sat down with the winger to discuss his career, the Indian Super League and his thoughts on Indian football.
Q: From NorthEast United last season to Dynamos now. What are the changes between the two sides and their style of play?
Len- In terms of changes in the style and play, being groomed under Roberto Carlos who is known for his stamina, crossing ability as well as his technical skills, he brings years of international experience with him which is very much projected in his coaching tactics. He really focuses on letting each player develop their unique skill and tries to bring them to their fullest maximum potential.
Q: Missed most of the season due to an injury, how well are you recovering from such a setback?
Len- Injuries are like an unwelcome guest and finally when you are afflicted with one, they leave you not only with a physical setbacks but even an emotional setback. Having said that we try to be immune to injuries and as players try to remain optimistic. This is part of the game but one we like to avoid.
Q: Touted by many as the man for the future in Indian football after impressing with Lajong and in the ISL. How difficult is it for a young player to deal with such pressure from the fans across the country?
Len- I am always humbled when fans and people have such kind of expectations. Personally I take it as a positive pressure and not the other way round.
Q: Three I-League clubs have had to shut down now. Where do you feel the league needs to work upon to become more stable? Is combining the two leagues a good option?
Len- Its really sad that three renowned clubs have had to shut down due to various reasons. I can't say whether dissolving these two leagues could be the solution. All I can say as of now is, I wish AIFF would look deeper into the matter for the future of the clubs as well as the players and most importantly for the future of Indian Football.
