Manchester United lost the derby to Manchester City this past Saturday at Old Trafford and Irish football pundit, Eamon Dunphy thinks he knows why. The former Irish footballer appeared on 2fm’s sports show Game On this week and was brutal in his assessment of Jose Mourinho and his men, especially his two biggest signings, Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
With a price tag of €100 million attached to him, Paul Pogba struggled in the derby and failed to make an impact in a midfield populated by the likes of David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne. In fact, Marouane Fellaini was a more commanding presence in the midfield for the Red Devils. Eamon Dunphy, while speaking on the radio show ripped Pogba’s performance to shreds.
According to him, Pogba is set to be a failure because there’s no position in the team where he can play.
"Pogba... if you paid £50m you'd think 'Wow, we've made a move here' but for £100m. He's nothing... There's no way you can play him, he does nothing well enough. He doesn't have a football brain and takes up the wrong positions all the time. I don't see anything in him and I think he's going to be a spectacular failure."

Dunphy’s critique of Mourinho’s side didn’t just end there. He called into question the wisdom of the purchases made by the Portuguese manager and suggested he may have made some mistakes. The Irishman was eager to furnish listeners with his opinion on Ibrahimovic as well.
"Mourinho may have lost the plot permanently. He bought this guy Ibrahimovic who scored a goal Saturday when the new wonderful goalkeeper dropped the ball at his feet. Ibrahimovic won't be in the team at Christmas. Not in the big games. He might knock over little teams like he's been doing but he's not a big-game player.”
While the details of the Swedish forward’s goal are true, predicting his failure in the team might seem harsh to United supporters and his time at some of the biggest clubs in the world may seem in contradiction to Dunphy’s claim that he isn’t a big game player.

Dunphy was not kind to the United pair and even made digs at captain Wayne Rooney and defender Eric Bailly:
"He looked overweight and tired after 20 minutes. So did Pogba, he didn't look fit. Neither did Wayne Rooney who ended the game with his socks around his ankles which is always a bad sign. He is a shadow of the player he was. And this new defender Bailly looks like he's a headbanger."
While United supporters will not take kindly to Dunphy’s analysis, only time will tell if there is any truth in what he said.
