Paul Breitner and Jurgen Klinsmann, two legends of German football, came to Brazil recently and said the same thing: The Bundesliga is the best football league in the world. Nobody here in Brazil agreed. Both gave a long interview to ESPN Brazil channel.
Breitner, former German world champion in 1974 and winner of the Champions League in 1974 for Bayern Munich, also was very patriotic “We compete to win in all sports; football, formula 1, handball, and since 2009 we have the best football league in the planet”.
Klinsmann, a former striker who was world champion with Germany in 1990 and the current coach of the U.S. team, said that the Bundesliga already surpass the Premier League.
Coldly analyzing, there is a certain nationalism in these two figures above.
With the exception of Bayern Munich, is there a German team that plays a more attractive football than Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal?
Perhaps Borussia Dortmund is the only German club that has been able to play against those major english teams. Schalke 04 and Bayer Leverkusen are not on the same level as these teams. No way. Bayern and Dortmund were in the last Champions League final, but if you check the German clubs’ performances in European tournaments in the last 5 or 10 years, only Bayern Munich was very competitive! Only Bayern.
It is hard to deny the Bundesliga attendances success, exemplary organization and fabulous stadiums built for the World Cup 2006 which are now used by the German clubs. But from a technical point of view; as a football product, atmosphere and game quality, the Premier League still is the most attractive football league in the world.
