Is Ronaldo headed for a platinum record this season?

As of 8th October 2012, the Real Madrid star had scored 14 goals in the first 11 official games that he had played for the Los Blancos. The games included the first 7 La Liga games, the 2 legs of the Spanish Super Copa and the first 2 group fixtures of the Champions League.

When Cristiano Ronaldo finished last season with 60 goals, a repeat of such an extraordinary feat seemed very difficult. Five months on, and after the first 11 official games, the co-runner-up of the UEFA Best Player 2012 award is on course to do the near impossible of breaking all the records set last season by him. In the first 11 matches, he had found the back of the net 14 times, which is the best goal scoring start of his career, out doing the 10 goals that he got at the start of the 2010/11 campaign.

The Portuguese captain opened his account in the first leg of the Spanish Super Copa and scored again in the return leg, in a tie in which he emerged as the stand out player over the 2 legs for Real Madrid. His first league goal came during Match Day 3 of the Liga BBVA when he scored a brace against Granada and has since become the leading goal scorer for the team, netting 8 times in the next 4 matches, which included a hat-trick against Deportivo and a brace in the El Clasico at Nou Camp. His Champions League campaign has also gotten off to a flying start with a hat-trick against Ajax and the crucial 90th minute winner at the Bernabeu against the Premier League champions Manchester City. Real Madrid have scored a total of 25 goals in these 11 games of which 14 have been scored by Cristiano Ronaldo, which roughly amounts to a staggering 56 % of the total goals.

In his previous 11 seasons of professional football, the Madrid No. 7 had never managed to score as many goals in the first 11 official games. His best start (in the same number of matches, i.e., the first 11) while playing for Sporting Lisbon and Manchester United was just 2 goals. That figure has improved considerably ever since he signed for Real Madrid. In 2009 and 2011, he scored 9 goals in the first 11 games, whereas in 2010, the number was 10, which was his previous best until this season.

And this career best performance comes at the time when reports have been rife over his apparent discomfort at the Bernabeu and that he is not enjoying his football in the Spanish capital. If while not “enjoying” his game, this goal machine can score 14 in 11 matches one can only guess at the number he would have if he wasn’t having troubles. This current feat has only further proved the fact that all said and done, Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the prolific footballers of the modern times and there can be no arguing with that.
