What's the story?
Kerala Blasters' star signing Dimitar Berbatov is said to have suffered a muscle strain during tonight's ISL clash with FC Goa at the Fatorda Stadium. The Bulgarian was substituted early in the first half of the match after going down injured.
In case you didn't know...
Dimitar Berbatov was signed as the marquee player by Sachin Tendulkar co-owned Kerala Blasters for ISL 2017. The former Manchester United and Tottenham star hadn't scored any goals for the Blasters but played an influential role in the side.
The heart of the matter
In the third minute of tonight's FC Goa vs Kerala Blasters game, Berbatov went down injured, and limped out to the bench as Rene Meulensteen replaced him with Milan Singh. Kerala Blasters went on to lose the match 5-2 in what was their first defeat of the season, having drawn their first three home games.
Berbatov looked highly disappointed, but the fact that he did manage to limp off the pitch bodes well for the Blasters. In the post-match press conference, the club confirmed that the former Manchester United striker has suffered a muscle injury.
What's next?
This could turn out to be a big blow for Kerala Blasters, as the Bulgarian is set to miss a few matches due to this injury. Kerala Blasters will be looking to get Berbatov up and running as soon as possible. They have looked a little light in the attacking department this season, and Berbatov's absence could compound their problems.
Author's take
Berbatov's injury further aggravates Rene Meulensteen's concerns going into the season as Kerala Blasters have struggled in front of the goal and Berbatov's absence will only increase the problems. The Kerala Blasters coach will hope that Berbatov can recover quickly as more than his goals, his presence on the field for Blasters will be missed dearly.
