What's the story?
Northeast United FC are closing in on a deal with Pathachakra defender Provat Lakra, who had an impressive loan stint with Gokulam FC in the I-League 2017/18.
In case you didn't know...
Kalyani-born 20-year-old Provat Lakra started his youth career at Kalyani based United Sports Club in the Calcutta Second Division League. Seen as a promising talent, the sturdy left-back was soon poached by the Calcutta Premier Division A side Pathachakra.
The heart of the matter
Lakra is currently under a contract with Pathachakra till 2020. A loan move to I-League debutants Gokulam Kerala saw Lakra make 15 appearances for the Kozhikode-based side.
On the other hand, Northeast United FC, after a disastrous ISL season, look to bolster their squad for the campaign ahead. After leaking 27 goals throughout the tournament, finishing 10th and subsequently failing to qualify for the Indian Super Cup, Northeast United FC's new manager Avram Grant has made the defence a priority, showing some interest in left-back Povrat Lakra. The Highlanders are in talks with Pathachakra over a deal for Lakra, that would see the Kolkata outfit get around the sum of Rs 8 lakh as transfer fee, Sportskeeda has learnt.
Gokulam FC had an encouraging debut season as they beat giants Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and eventual champion Minerva Punjab. The defence has been a key part of Gokulam FC's campaign. Provat Lakra has been vital in defence. The sturdy left-back who established himself as a starter since the beginning of his loan stint for Gokulam FC has been solid and looks to carry on his exploits for Northeast United FC in the upcoming ISL season.
What's next?
As of this moment, Lakra is under contract to Pathachakra and loaned out to Gokulam FC. However, a permanent transfer to NorthEast United is very much on the cards.
Author's take
Porvat Lakra will be a wonderful addition to NorthEast United FC's squad as they look to put the 2017/18 ISL season behind them and challenge for the league next season. The Rs 8 lakh fee can prove to be a bargain should the youngster perform to his abilities. However, it is still a good fee from Pathachakra's point of view and this deal is promising for all the parties involved.
