There are plenty of foreigners in the Indian Super League but none from India’s neighbouring countries in the SAFF region. However that could change as Bangladesh national team captain Mamunul Islam is set to join Atletico de Kolkata according to media reports in Bangladesh.
Central midfielder Mamunul impressed during Bangladesh club Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi’s run to the IFA Shield final earlier this year and the 25-year-old also played a key role in his country’s 2-2 draw with India in Goa back in March.
Mamunul is expected to sign a three-month contract with Atletico de Kolkata but will only join training after the Asian Games, where he will be one of the three senior players in the Bangladesh Under-23 team.
“The registration process is completed with the involvement of Sheikh Jamal. It will be a three-month contract and will officially be informed very soon and I will play for the Atletico de Kolkata in the Indian Super League. A top official of Atletico will visit Dhaka on September 5 to finalise the deal with me,” Mamunul was quoted saying by Dhaka Tribune.
Mamunul will become the fourth foreigner to sign for Atletico de Kolkata outside the international draft.
