Italy and Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero is set to sign for Delhi Dynamos as their marquee foreigner in the Indian Super League according to various media reports.
The 2006 World Cupper was also in talks with Hungarian club Honved FC but a TOI report says that the 39-year-old Italian forward has decided to join ISL’s Delhi franchise with an official announcement expected later today.
Del Piero is also expected to become one of the brand ambassadors of the new league and will become the fourth World Cupper to join the ISL after Joan Capdevila, David Trezeguet and Robert Pires.
He spent 19 years at Juventus, 11 of them as captain, and won eight Serie A titles, a Champions League and a Coppa Italia. Del Piero was a key member of the Italy squad that won the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany and famously scored the second in the 2-0 semi-final win over hosts Germany.
After leaving Juventus in 2012, he joined Australia’s A-League outfit Sydney FC and played a big role in raising the profile of the sport in Australia during his two years there.
